Tips to Help You Find Student Housing

When you are on the hunt to find student housing, there are a few things to consider.  First of all, you have to decide whether you want to live on-campus or off. Then, you have to decide what type of living arrangement you want at your chosen locale. There are two basic types of student housing options, those being dorms or other student housing on-campus or off campus housing or apartments. Read below to learn why we feel off campus living is the ideal living situation for you as a college student:

On-Campus Dorm or Student Housing:

Admittedly, living on campus does have its advantages. You have easy access to your school and are able to experience all that college life has to offer. Unfortunately, living on-campus also has more than its fair share of disadvantages. First of all, dorm rooms are often extremely small. Secondly, in many cases, colleges require students who live on campus to purchase a meal plan. Thirdly, privacy is nonexistent when living in a dorm or other on-campus housing.  Finally, it also is extremely hard to study as you are at the whim of others’ sleep (and party) schedules.  All in all, on-campus living arrangements are loud,  offer small space and give you limited control over your own living area.

The Off–Campus Living Option When Seeking to Find Student Housing:

Your other main option for housing during college is off campus living in an apartment. This form of housing has many advantages. It keeps you close enough to campus for easy access, but allows you enough distance to give you the quiet you need to study. In addition, in most cases, apartments are much more spacious than living in a dorm. Therefore, you will find off campus living advantageous for all the reasons mentioned. Now that you know off campus living is ideal, now you need to narrow down your choices to find student housing.

Things You Want to Know About an Apartment Before Signing The Housing Contract:

There are many questions you need to ask when you are choosing an apartment for your college years. A few are listed below:

  • Are there any utilities included in the cost of installment payments?
  • How long is the housing contract for this apartment?
  • How much of a deposit do your require up front?
  • Do any of the apartments come furnished?
  • Does the apartment complex provide free parking? If so, how many spaces do renters get when living in an apartment?
  • Do you offer gym memberships or access to a pool to residents?
  • Do you offer deals for students?
  • How long does it take to travel from the apartments to campus?

By now, you have probably seen the advantages that off campus housing has over on-campus living options, and you have even found out what you need to ask to find the best apartment for you. We at Douglas Heights offer the best when it comes to off campus apartments.
